In 1957 a well known blues guitarist by the name of "Jimmy Reed" was unable to perform and 18 year old Leon was asked to take his place. The crowd couldn't tell the difference and the show was a hit. Leon gave a show stopping performance. And thus he was born "LIL JIMMY REED".

His mental faculties totally intact as he laid motionless in his bed, Bauby communicated using his left eyelid and composed, letter by letter, a memoir of his struggle. Bauby died two days after its publication.
