A Royal Pageant Comes To Traquair

Traquair Medieval Fayre
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2008
11am - 5pm

Join Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland as he arrives to a hero's welcome to take back the Royal castle of Traquair from Edward 1, hammer of the Scots.

The grand pageant will take place as part of the Medieval Fayre at Traquair on the 24th and 25th May. As horses, knights and the royal household descend the grassed avenue there will be a host of entertainment including a competition of arms before the King and Queen to select the King’s champion.

As well as the pageant there will be a huge variety of other entertainments to enjoy including a living history encampment, archery, falconry, early music, wandering minstrels and a fire breathing jester!

You can have your tarot read in the house, learn about armour and dressing a knight, join a workshop to make helmets and swords for the children and learn about sword fighting techniques.

The old walled garden provides a fabulous setting for the many medieval traders who will be selling all kinds of goods from clothing, leather tankards and candles to jewellery and hand blown glass. This year there is also the chance to take part in ceramic tile making and willow ware.

A special Medieval Fayre Ale is brewed for the weekend in the Traquair Brewery and a spit roast and hot pies on sale as well as home cooked lunches and teas from the 1745 Cottage Restaurant.

Tickets are now on sale for the event at reduced prices. Box office: Tel. 01896 830323.

Dishing the Dirt on a Racy Weekend - Dirty Weekend 2008

The UK's first ever multi-sport adventure sports festival hits the Scottish Borders on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July 2008.

Three heart-stopping multi-sport events descend on the Tweed Valley as the ACE Adventure Race, the Polaris Mountain Bike Challenge and The Dirty Dozen, a new 12K Trail run, combine to create an extraordinary adventure sports festival.

The Dirty Dozen is a 12K race with a difference, taking to the woods and forests of the Tweed Valley and providing a superb run on off-road trails; passing through woodland, crossing rivers, traversing rough ground and tackling some major ascents (and descents) along the way.

For a slightly tougher challenge, the ACE Race (Adventure Challenge Endurance) 1 and 2 Day adventure race events will also be hosted alongside the Dirty Dozen. With options over 1 and 2 days, ACE Races are adventure races that combine running, biking and kayaking whilst navigating for checkpoints in challenging terrain.

Third in this triple crown is the Polaris Challenge, a mountain bike navigation event held over two days where competitors have to reach as many checkpoints as possible within the allotted times. Riders are given a list of checkpoints and sent out from the base camp at Traquair where they ride for between 5 and 7 hours before returning to base to receive further instructions.

Choose from adventure racing, mountain biking or trail running with the selection of well established and brand new events, all based from a bustling adventure village in the grounds of a Scottish baronial stately home - Traquair House.

Full details of the Dirty Weekend are available here.

Printworks plays its part in Industrious Innerleithen event

Robert Smail’s Printworks continues its celebration of 500 Years of Printing in Scotland on a special day to mark Innerleithen’s industrial heritage. The National Trust for Scotland property is holding Victorian themed and print related events on Saturday 26 April.

The events are part of the Industrious Innerleithen event which celebrates the town’s past. It is run in partnership with the Scottish Borders Council Library Service, Innerleithen Community Trust and Fortissimo.

Visitors to Smail’s will step back to the Victorian era with the Trust’s popular Living History tour. Staff will be in costume and character, allowing visitors n insight into the trade of printing, the talents required and technology employed in the 19th Century. Tours run from 12 noon – 5pm and admission costs £14 per family.

Property Manager Gen Harrison said:

“Innerleithen has such an interesting past and Robert Smail’s was an important part of that. That’s why we felt it was important to get involved in this special day. Our Living History tours really bring the past to life to visitors. They’re very popular both with visitors and the staff who enjoy getting dressed up and going back in time!”

The full programme for Industrious Innerleithen is:

10am until Noon
Innerleithen Library - Pupils from St. Ronan’s Primary P7 will see the culmination of their enterprise project with Robert Smail’s Printing Works. 2.30pm
Innerleithen Community Trust will lead a walk as part of the Industrious Innerleithen
The industrial past of Innerleithen owes everything to the character and ingenuity of its people and to the Leithen water around which the community has grown. The potential of the water to power industry led to inventive engineering to allow the wheels of industry to turn as the working life of Innerleithen grew over time. Power was drawn from a constructed mill lade that weaves its way through the heart of the town. Learn more about the role of water in Innerleithen’s industry on this walk. It begins at the Memorial Hall Car Park at 2.30pm.

Fortissimo and Friends
Victorian Concert, Innerleithen Church Hall, 7pm

Scottish Borders Healthy Choices Awards 2008

2 of our members - Lazels at Peebles Hotel Hydro and 1745 Restaurant, Traquair, are the latest catering establishments to gain the Scottish Borders Healthy Choices Award - for their commitment to developing, providing and promoting healthy food choices.

Len Cumming, Head Chef at Peebles Hotel Hydro feels it is important to work at a local level: "There are a number of community initiatives in Tweeddale that we are keen to support, passing on some of our skills and knowledge relating to healthy cooking and healthy eating. A real focus for us is our work with children and we have the facilities within Lazels to allow us to do this. Attaining the Scottish Borders Healthy Choices Award also complements the work we are doing at a national level neither of which we could do without the support we have from Douglas Macmillan, Director."

Rob Dalgleish, chef at 1745, was delighted to receive the award: "This award gives us a real boost at the start of the new season. Visitors to Traquair House have the opportunity to go for a nice walk in the grounds and then stop in the café for a bite to eat with a delicious range of healthier dishes to choose from."
